Cough is a common complaint. If it lasts more than 8 weeks, cough is described as chronic. Presence of shortness of breath, with or without exertion, in association with persistent cough needs to be investigated without delay because it could be an indication of asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Weight loss and fatigue when associated with cough that persisted over three weeks calls for immediate investigation.
